Eat your way to a better mood

It's now proven that changing your diet can seriously change your mood for the better. Anxiety and depression have been linked to certain foods and by making changes to your diet you can seriously improve your mood.

Feel good food

Bananas -
contain vitamin b6 and tryptophan, which is good for improving mood and also sleep.

Meat, fish, beans and eggs - protein rich foods like these also  contain tryptophan which can boost serotonin which is often lacking in people with low mood.

Leafy green vegetables,
particularly savoy cabbage, peas, asparagus and spinach  - are very rich in folic acid.

Wholegrain food, wholemeal bread, vegetable and fruit - As well as containing essential key nutrients for good health, they also take longer to digest so you don't experience highs and lows in blood sugars, and so keep your mood more stable.

Nuts and seeds
- which contain magnesium and selenium, a lack of which can contribute to depression.

Fish
- particularly salmon, trout and mackerel which contain high amounts of omega 3 and selenium.

Garlic, sunflower seeds, brazil nuts and wheat germ - which are rich in selenium and very good for mood.

Seafood - rich in zinc and helpful for low mood.

Chocolate - good quality chocolate with high quantities of cacao contain a chemical which increases levels of endorphins and serotonin, the brains natural happy hormones!

Feel bad food

Caffeine - While this can boost brain function and concentration, the effects are short lived and too much can cause further tiredness later on in the day.

Sugar
- Sugar plays havoc with blood sugar levels. It causes them to peak and then drop rapidly which can have a major effect on mood.

White flour and wheat
- gluten has been linked to depression.

Alcohol - not only seriously effects blood sugar levels but alcohol is also a depressant.
